What a fabulous Autumn it has been – I recently enjoyed five sunny days in Sorrento at the annual Writers’ Festival. A highlight was listening to Virginia Trioli speak about the importance of community and sharing meals – something that immediately made me smile, as it captures exactly what Probus is about. A perfect example is our upcoming daytime picnic at Joan & Jim’s retreat centre on the 11 June.
The festival also highlighted a growing trend – fewer people are reading as the world becomes increasingly screen-focused. With our Tuesday book group now full, I wonder if there might be interest in starting another group, perhaps with a different theme or style, so more members can keep reading.
Following our last meeting I had a chat with Shane about our Wednesday parking situation, as we are sharing the parking space with the women golfers. To help things run a little more smoothly I suggest that those who arrive early – and are able – consider parking in Victor Avenue. Even better walk or car pool!
What a wonderful day 30 of us enjoyed at the MCG, very knowledgeable guides, and a delicious lunch at the Paddock Cafe. Thank you Pauline – it was a real treat. We were all impressed by the sheer scale of the MCG and pleasantly surprised to learn how sustainable it is .
Now we look forward to the next outing to the Yarra Valley – there are still 9 seats available on the bus, so please come along.
With Mother’s Day fast approaching I got my treat early. My daughter knows me only too well, so off we went to Ferntree Gully for an op shop charity fashion parade and afternoon tea – And yes I may have added a “new” outfit to my wardrobe!
With Volunteer Week taking place from the 18-24 May, it is the perfect opportunity to acknowledge the many contributions made by our members. So much is done quietly and without fuss, yet it is this spirit of generosity that makes our club such a strong and supportive team.
The theme this year is “Your Year to Volunteer “-please speak to a committee member if you would like to get to get more involved.
Look forward to seeing you all at our next meeting on Wednesday 20th May .
Janette James
