MCG Outing Report

With great anticipation our group of 30 members made the early morning trip to the MCG on Thursday April 30 boarding the train from Mordialloc to Highett. Unusually the train was packed with students on a daily excursion, who politely gave up seats for our group.
On arrival at Richmond we took the walk up the hill to gate 3.
After splitting into groups our guides proceeded on the long journey around the members area and onto the arena. We were all fascinated by how small the ground looked compared to from the stands . It is interesting to find out that the MCG is today totally environmentally sustainable. All the water used is collected from the roof and the solar panels provide all power needed, the only such stadium in the world. There are approximately 185,000 visitors go through every year. It was founded in 1838 and is one of the worlds oldest sporting stadiums.
From there into the change rooms below which were set for the night game between Collingwood and Hawthorn. There is no doubt the sports players are well catered for looking at all the gym equipment, medical room and Physio tables. A special room is provided for the wives and children to use during matches.
It was interesting to learn that the largest crowd ever was the Billy Graham crusade some years ago. Also to see the change rooms for artists such as Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran etc are not what you’d call glamorous but they are still well catered for. The kitchen is one of the largest of its type in the world and even services the Australian Open tennis tournament.
From there it was off to the sports museum and the wonderful Shane Warne exhibition.
After just over two hours and nearly five km walk, we had a much needed rest for lunch, then we all straggled back to the train.
A great day was had by all but no doubt a few tired legs would struggle the next day. But it was an enjoyable day and well supported by all. A special thank you to Pauline for organising such a wonderful day.
