Page Steel has recently installed and commissioned a highly advanced computer welding/fabrication system, and we seek to advance its capabilities by relating it more directly to the design and analysis of structures so that transfer of information can be more accurate and cost economics can be improved.

 

Sometime back while showing ASI and ACSEV the technologies that we have put in place, we were made aware of methodologies from design charts that could support better design and convert a large amount of connections over to a fillet weld design versus that of full strength “butt” welding.

This information was actually acted upon by our firm at the start of 2020 on a major project where we were able to get the design engineer to utilise these charts created by Russell Brown of R.I. Brown Pty Ltd (Structural Engineer and member of both ASI and ACSEV) with the help of Swinburne University, to convert our full-strength “butt” construction as originally proposed by the design engineer to one of a more cost-effective fillet weld approach.

The cost savings made us aware of the advantages of using the more advanced methodologies available in AS4100 (being the steel code) and having them in a format that the average design
