The world just seems to be going crazy. We are seeing more dictators running countries and more elements within countries creating division. It seems that the opportunity of having a respectful discussion from opposing sides is becoming more difficult. I believe that this is leading to people being less willing to express a view on any topic. The silent majority is becoming more silent.
Our generation is used to socialisation and respectful discussion. We are seeing less and less of this in the current world and it is vital that there is still a place for it. I believe Probus can offer these socialisation and the discussion opportunities, but Probus numbers are in decline, with four of the ten Bayside Clubs closing in the past two years.
To maintain the benefits of Probus I believe we need to pursue two main actions:-
1. We need to be aware that some of our members are not as confident as others and make sure they are included in discussions and made to feel welcome at meetings and events. We particularly need to make space for new members in our interactions.
2. We need to form alliances with the other Bayside Clubs. We are all trying different activities, some which work, others that may not. By communicating with the other Clubs we can learn about what works and what may not. In the past we have invited other Clubs to join us for a certain activity, often when we could not get sufficient numbers ourselves.
Brighton Central Combined Probus Club has started this approach with their invitation to all Bayside Probus members to join them for their Cup Day lunch. I can tell you it was an exceptional event and it was a good opportunity to meet more local people. There needs to be more of it!
