Croquet Hoops

What more could one ask for? A mild evening on Thursday March 21, a light breeze, very pleasant surroundings in which to enjoy a meal and an opportunity to promote what Probus is about, “Friendship, fellowship and fun.” Our twenty-six members were greeted by Sandringham Croquet Club members, Ivy, Lyn and Andrew, who welcomed us and provided firsthand tutoring to some very challenging participants. There was a lot of laughter as we novices endeavoured to achieve the task of hitting a medium size ball through a hoop that appeared to be smaller than the ball. Of course, there were some members who mastered this task very quickly. Our Past President managed to score a hoop from a very long distance and our Vice-President displayed a very strong aptitude for the techniques of the pendulum swing, although he seemed to be across all areas of the court. One can only guess at what was happening on the court occupied by Wendy Crawford and Kathy Manallack as their constant merriment could be heard by the players on adjoining courts. Could you imagine these two sitting beside each other in a classroom, poor teacher! Well-deserved awards were made by President Mike to Wendy Crawford, Denise Hesline and Julie Walsh. A special thanks to Geraldine McGann, Penny the Pav Queen and all the kitchen hands, who, I must say, were challenged in the preparation and presentation of the meal due to a very small kitchen. Well done, the final result was great. Suffice to say, the evening was a great success, the weather gods were on our side, the venue was well presented and being in the company of friends and acquaintances is what it is all about.
